Brazilian coffee farmers have swapped South America for southern Scotland to share their agricultural experiences with the owner of a dairy herd.
Gabriel Lancha Oliveira and his wife Flavia travelled to Dumfries & Galloway to meet up with Mark Callender (one of the directors of Cows & Co) who runs Crofthead Farm at Crocketford.
Mr Lancha Oliveira supplies green coffee beans from Brazil to the European market and sells his produce directly to Cumbria where it is roasted by Carlisle’s John Watt and Son. Meanwhile, milk from Mr Callender’s farm supplies the milk for Cows & Co’s range of artisan dairy products, including cheese.
The pair shared their expertise in serving up quality products and Mr Callender showed his South American visitors around the farm to highlight how he and his family have spent the last 20 years developing and nurturing their Ayrshire herd.
The meeting took place this month at Crofthead Dairy, Crocketford, Dumfries and Galloway.
Most coffee imported in to Britain is usually bought on a stock exchange but Mr Lancha Oliveira’s product comes directly to Cumbria via Cal’s Coffee – a company owned by their partner Calum Maciel Brough who is half-Brazilian and half-Cumbrian.
Cows and Co director Stuart MacLennan said: “The visit was a big success and it was great to bring together like-minded people with such a passion and energy for their businesses.
“As a result of these new links we’re investigating possible opportunities for exporting Cows & Co cheese to Brazil and we very much support John Watt & Son’s ongoing work to promote the great coffee that comes from Gabriel and Flavia’s farm.”
