December 2020 Coffee of the Month
Coffee is known in Burundi as ‘the precious cherry’, and is the main crop of the region.
There are around 1,640 smallholders living around Tangara, Burundi who deliver the coffee to Gihere Central Washing station. The coffee partner within the country operates nine different washing stations and works within communities to increase farmer livelihoods and general equality in coffee producing areas.
The construction of Gihere CWS has enabled local coffee farming families to sell coffee as cherry at fair prices, avoiding the high labor and time costs of processing in order to spend more time pursuing other projects and income generating activities.
Gihere CWS also participates in a number of farmer outreach and support projects.
This coffee has overtures of fruit and a sweet, smokey mouthfeel.
