|June’s Coffee Of The Month – India Monsoon Malabar Karnataka Ghats|
This month’s coffee comes from Southern India in the Karnataka area of the Western Ghats. Although India is best known as a producer of fine Teas, it is now the fifth largest producer of Arabica Coffee in the world. It has been growing and exporting exceptional coffees for more than 150 years.
The commercial production of coffee began in 1840, when the British established coffee plantations throughout the mountainous regions of Southern India. The climate was ideal for coffee cultivation with high altitudes, sunny slopes, ample rainfall and soil rich with humus content.
The monsooning process consists of exposing natural coffee beans in 4 – 6-inch-thick piles, to moisture laden monsoon winds in a well-ventilated brick floored warehouse.
This process is carried out on the West Coast of India, making use of the winds from the Arabian Sea during the southwest Monsoon months of June to September.
This is a 12 to 16-week process where the beans absorb moisture, swelling to twice their original size and developing a range of colours from pale fold to light brown.
This coffee has a unique flavour and a medium body and acidity with notes of wood and a smoky, earthy taste.
