Guatemala, San Francisco, RFA certified coffee.
January 2020’s coffee of the month comes from the Finca San Francisco, one of the biggest farms in Quiché. Quiché has one of the highest populations in the country with the majority of the people being of Mayan descent. The area is dominated by it’s central highlands which provide the perfect environment for coffee cultivation.
Guatemala’s coffee industry developed in the 1850’s, pushed by foreign companies who identified it’s coffee growing potential. Today we buy our Guatemalan coffee through Anacafé, which was established in 1960 as their national coffee association to protect and represent all the coffee producers in the country. They also run a huge program called Funcafé which helps to provide education to coffee grower’s families. They have several amazing projects, one of which focuses on paying for local teachers which eliminates the risky journeys that most of the children would have to take to get to school before.
This coffee is also Rainforest Alliance Certified (RFA) this indicates that Finca San Francisco has been audited to meet standards that require environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The RFA seal ensures that the coffee producers are focused on creating farms that have good biodiversity and that they manage their natural resources for the benefit of the planet and the people who work there.
